Muzzles. The word alone can create thoughts of aggression or danger, often associated with a dog who is unpredictable or going to bite.
But I'd like to take a step back and challenge this perception.
Muzzles, basket muzzles in particular, are a misunderstood tool in the world of dog behavior. Rather than a symbol of irresponsibility, they can be hugely beneficial for both dogs and their owners. In this blog we will explore why basket muzzles are not just a good thing but a necessary and compassionate to for many people and dogs.
Uses of Basket Muzzles
It is important to remember that dogs wear basket muzzles for all sorts of reasons.
To name just a few and give you an idea:
Fear or aggression towards people or other animals
Handling discomfort (vet visits and grooming)
Poop eating
Scavenging of other unsafe items
Excitable mouthiness
As you can see, there are many different reasons that a dog might benefit from wearing a basket muzzle. So next time you see a muzzled dog, try not to jump to conclusions about that dog's behavior.
Debunking Myths
Now that we've introduced why a dog might wear a muzzle, let's address the elephant in the room – the misconception that muzzles are cruel or inhumane. This couldn't be further from the truth, especially when it comes to basket muzzles. Unlike other types of muzzles that restrict a dog's ability to pant, drink, or even fully open their mouth, basket muzzles allow for all these behaviors. They're designed with comfort and safety in mind, providing ample space for a dog's snout while still preventing biting or grabbing. This is why as a certified dog behavior consultant, I recommend basket muzzles over the other types.
Similarly, if a dog is properly trained to wear the basket muzzle, it will not be an added stressor or uncomfortable for them to wear. They will actually get EXCITED when it is presented for them to put on. This is why it is important to go slow and introduce basket muzzles gradually and positively to dogs!

Embracing the use of basket muzzles can help shift public perception and promote the responsible care and management of dogs . Instead of viewing a muzzled dog as a threat, we should see them as a responsible owner taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of their dog and everyone around them. By normalizing the use of muzzles, we can create a more inclusive environment where people and dogs are accepted and understood, not judged for using a safety tool!
If you see a dog out in the world wearing a basket muzzle, it is best to not approach unless you ask the person first. It may be that the dog is fearful of unfamiliar people and needs space. It could also be that the dog is in a training session and their handler would rather not be bothered. Regardless, I always recommend the default of ignoring, giving space, and verbally asking (from afar) if you want to know more!
